New population of Middle Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocoptes medius) in the Aragón Pyrenees

The Middle Spotted Woodpecker was cited in the Aragonese Pyrenees for the first time in 2019, and a couple nested in 2021. In spring 2022, and additionally in the following autumn and winter, a systematic surveys was carried out in forests with oaks in the Ribagorza region. Eleven territorial individuals were detected in forests dominated by the cerrioid oak Quercus cerrioides distributed in an upper section of the Ésera river valley. The origin of this population is unknown, but it could be related due to the existence of a relict population that would have gone unnoticed. It is more likely due to the arrival of individuals from some source population. The closest population is located approximately 30 km away on the northern slope of the Pyrenees, separated by a mountain barrier of more than 2,300 m, while the closest known one on the southern slope is located in the Navarrese Pyrenees, more than 100 km. The Middle Spotted Woodpecker is considered a sedentary species, with very limited dispersal movements. The establishment of this new and apparently isolated population could suggest that the species has a greater dispersal and colonizing capacity than has been attributed.
