Abstract

The wolf (Canis lupus) population in the Iberian Peninsula faced a severe decline during the 19th and 20th centuries, primarily due to human persecution. This led to a near-extinction crisis in the 1960s-70s in some historical distribution areas and the extent of species decline remained unclear in certain regions, especially the Pyrenees. This study delves into the historical and contemporary distribution of Iberian wolves in the Pyrenees across three periods: 1850, 1950, and 2000-2021. The data for the first two periods were obtained from surveys of qualified informants and those for the third period were provided by the autonomous communities and collected from literature reviews. All data, categorized as “presence” or “absence,” underwent transformation into 10x10 km UTM grids for interpretation. Results unveil a significant change in wolf presence: 68.2% in 1850, 25.2% in 1950, and 18.3% in 2000-2021, indicating significant inter-period differences. Despite interpretational challenges in historical data, the study concludes that there has been a decline in wolf populations between the 19th and 20th centuries. Notably, data absence from the 1950s raises concerns about regional disappearance until a resurgence in the 2000s.
