We document the relationship between rainfall variability and sediment transport at different spatial scales in central Chile (32 to 33 L.S.). Results obtained in small experimental plots where shrubs had been eliminated, indicate that only two of 23 storms accounted for 90% of the total sediment transport. In contrast, plots with the normal shrub cover (controls), had only 75% of the sediment transport accounted for by those two events. This variability in rainfall and associated sediment yields also expresses itself in the rainfall and amounts of sediments collected in the discharges of larger rainfed catchments in central Chile. We discuss the significance of these results for the erosion rates in Mediterranean-type environments.
