In 2001, the Consejería de Medio Ambiente of the Junta de Andalucía established a Monitoring Network on ecosystems of Abies pinsapo Boiss.for evaluating the phytosanitary state in the natural range areas of A. pinsapo in the Iberian Península: Sierra de las Nieves (Málaga, Spain), Sierra de Grazalema (Cadiz, Spain) and Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja (Málaga, Spain). This network is based on a 1 x 1 Km grid established throughout the forest stands where Abies pinsapo is present, given by the Mapa Forestal de España (Spanish land cover map, RUIZ DE LA TORRE, 1990). The Network has been constructed from 35 sample plots, which will be visited annually (in summer) in order to assess the state of trees. This article describes the network design process and the main results from the first campaign of sampling.
